Markdown output

Files never leave your browserHow?

This converter turns reStructuredText (Sphinx, docutils, PyPI READMEs) into GitHub Flavored Markdown: sections, code blocks, grid and simple tables, admonitions, footnotes and links. Paste .rst text and copy the Markdown.

Last updated:

How it works

  1. Paste RST

Paste a README.rst or a Sphinx page, open an .rst file or try the sample.

  2. Choose the Markdown style

Admonitions as GitHub alerts or quotes, list marker, emphasis and code fence.

  3. Copy the Markdown

Use it for GitHub, MkDocs, Docusaurus or a MyST migration; check the preview.

Features

  • Section levels from adornments

Levels follow the order in which underline and overline styles first appear, exactly as docutils decides them.

  • All block types

code-block, code and sourcecode directives, literal blocks after ::, doctest blocks, line blocks and block quotes with attribution.

  • Tables

Grid tables, simple tables (with continuation lines), list-table and csv-table directives become Markdown tables.

  • References resolved

Named and anonymous hyperlink targets, embedded URIs, substitutions with images, numbered and auto-numbered footnotes.

Limits & privacy

Files up to 10 MB. Inputs above 256 KB are converted in a Web Worker. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion runs in your browser, and Open from URL fetches the file directly from the address you enter. See the privacy page.

Limits

include directives and Sphinx cross-references need the full project and are not resolved. Multi-row headers of tables keep only the first row as the Markdown header. Field lists become bold terms followed by their text.

FAQ

How do I convert RST to Markdown without pandoc?

Paste the reStructuredText here and copy the result; nothing needs to be installed.

What happens to Sphinx directives like toctree?

toctree, autodoc and include need the whole project, so they are skipped with a warning naming each one.

Are admonitions supported?

note, tip, important, warning, caution, danger, hint, seealso and generic admonition become GitHub alerts or quotes.

What about roles like :ref: and :doc:?

Cross-references become their text; :code:, :math:, :sup: and :sub: keep their meaning.

Can I convert Markdown to RST?

Yes, with Markdown → RST, linked above the result.
