Split a Markdown document into chapters
This tool splits one Markdown document into several .md files – at headings of the level you choose, by size or at a marker line – and names each file after its heading. Download all parts as a ZIP.

How it works
Open the document
Paste Markdown, open an .md file or load one from a URL. The sample is a small user guide with chapters.
Choose where to cut
Split before every H1, H2 or deeper heading, into parts of a maximum size, or at a marker line such as <!-- split -->.
Check and download
Preview each part with its file name and line count, download single files or all of them as one ZIP archive.
Features
Readable file names
Each file is named after its heading: "Settings & privacy" becomes 04-settings-privacy.md. Duplicate titles get a suffix, numbering keeps the order.
Code-aware
A "## heading" inside a fenced code block is code, not a chapter, so it never starts a new file.
Intro and front matter
Text before the first heading can become its own file, and the YAML or TOML front matter can be copied into every part.
Promote headings
Optionally make every part start with an H1: a chapter that was ## becomes #, and its subheadings move up with it.
Split by size
For long notes or prompts for AI tools, cut the text into parts of a maximum length at blank lines outside code blocks.
Limits & privacy
Documents up to 10 MB. The parts and the ZIP are created in your browser (the ZIP uses deflate compression); nothing is uploaded and no copy is kept after the tab is closed. See the privacy page.
FAQ
How do I split a Markdown file by headings?
Keep Split by: Headings and choose the level. With H2, every ## heading (and every #) starts a new file; ### subsections stay inside their chapter.
What are the files called?
The heading text in lower case with dashes, numbered in document order, e.g. 02-getting-started.md. Accents are dropped (Configuración → configuracion); with German umlauts as ae, oe, ue on, Übersicht becomes uebersicht.
Can I split at my own marker?
Choose Marker line and type the marker, for example <!-- split --> or ---split---. The marker line itself is removed from the output.
Is the text changed?
No. Every line ends up in exactly one part, unchanged, unless you turn on heading promotion or copy the front matter.
How do I put the parts back together?
Open Merge Markdown Files, drop the files from the ZIP, sort them by name and download one combined document.
Does it work for MDX or Obsidian notes?
Yes, headings work the same way. Components and wiki links are plain text for the splitter and stay as they are.
