Empty cells
Open an XML file and get an .xlsx workbook: the repeating element becomes rows, attributes and nested tags become columns, numbers and dates become real Excel cells.
How it works
Open or paste XML
Drop an .xml or .xml.gz file, use Open from URL, paste the markup or load the sample.
Pick the rows and columns
The most repeated element is used as rows automatically; type a path such as catalog/book to change it. Hide or reorder columns in the preview.
Download the workbook
Set the sheet name and press Download .XLSX. The file opens in Excel, LibreOffice, Numbers and Google Sheets.
Features
Clean columns
Attributes become @ columns, nested elements become dotted columns like author.name, and repeated children become one column per item, one JSON column or a joined list.
Typed cells
Numbers stay numbers, true/false become booleans, and ISO dates such as 2024-03-01 become Excel dates. Codes with leading zeros like 007 stay text.
Ready-to-use sheet
The header row is frozen and column widths fit the content. Text that looks like a formula is stored as plain text, never as a formula.
Large files
Conversion runs in a background worker. Rows beyond Excel's limit of 1,048,576 continue on extra sheets.
Safe XML parsing
External entities (XXE) are never loaded and entity expansion is limited; errors show line and column. XML → CSV opens the same data in the CSV converter.
Limits & privacy
Files can be up to 100 MB and 500,000 rows, also after decompressing an .xml.gz file. Files above 5 MB are converted from the file without loading them into the editor.
One repeating element becomes one sheet; cells longer than 32,767 characters are cut, as Excel requires. Styling beyond the frozen header is not applied. Fiscal invoices (CFDI, NF-e) are treated as ordinary XML. See the privacy page.
FAQ
How do I convert XML to Excel?
Open or paste the XML, check the table preview and press Download .XLSX. The workbook has one sheet with a frozen header row.
How do I open an XML file in Excel without converting it?
In Excel use Data › Get Data › From File › From XML, or File › Open and choose the XML file. Excel then builds its own table, which works well for simple files; this converter gives you control over rows and columns.
Can I convert XML to XLSX for free?
Yes, free and without sign-up. Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.
Why are some values text and not numbers?
Values with leading zeros, phone numbers and IDs longer than 15 digits are kept as text so that Excel does not change them.
Can I edit the XML in Excel and save it back?
Excel can only save XML through an XML map. A simpler route: edit the converted data, export it as CSV and use CSV to XML.
Is there an offline XML to Excel converter?
This page works offline after it has loaded, because the conversion runs in your browser.
