Article structured data for news and blog posts

This article schema generator creates Article, NewsArticle or BlogPosting JSON-LD for a story or blog post. Enter the headline, images, dates and authors and copy the checked script block for the article page.

How it works

  1. Choose the article type

NewsArticle for journalism, BlogPosting for blogs, Article for anything else; TechArticle, Report and others are available too.

  2. Headline, images, dates

The counter warns when the headline gets long. Dates are written in ISO 8601 with the time zone you pick.

  3. Authors and publisher

Each author as a Person or Organization with a profile URL, the publisher with its logo, then copy the block.

Features

  • Several authors

Every author is a separate item, as Google asks: never combine names in one field. A URL to the author page helps Google tell people apart.

  • Dates with time zone

datePublished and dateModified get the offset you select, so Google does not fall back to the time zone of Googlebot.

  • Images in three ratios

List 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1 versions one per line; the hint repeats Google's 50,000-pixel minimum.

  • Paywalled content

Mark the article as not free and give the CSS selector of the paywalled part, the markup Google uses to tell a paywall from cloaking.

Limits & privacy

Imported JSON-LD or HTML can be up to 1 MB. One time zone applies to both dates; edit the JSON if they differ.

The markup must describe the article on the same page: the headline and author names should match what readers see. Live blogs (LiveBlogPosting) and speakable markup need fields this form does not have – import and edit the JSON for those.

Validation uses the schema.org vocabulary (© schema.org sponsors, CC BY-SA 3.0, see licenses). Nothing leaves your browser – see the privacy page.

FAQ

Which properties are required for articles?

None. Google recommends headline, image, datePublished, dateModified and author with name and url – with them Google can show better titles, images and dates.

Article, NewsArticle or BlogPosting?

All three are handled the same way by Google. Pick the one that describes the content; NewsArticle helps for news sites.

Should dateModified change with every small edit?

Only when the content changes meaningfully. Updating the date without real changes is treated as a freshness trick.

Is the publisher required?

No, but it is useful: an Organization with name, url and logo ties the article to your site.

Can I add the article to a Google News sitemap with this?

No – a news sitemap is a separate XML file. This tool only produces the on-page structured data.

How long can the headline be?

There is no fixed limit any more, but long headlines are cut on some devices; the counter shows 110 characters as a practical guide.
