Recipe markup for cooking sites and food blogs

This recipe schema generator creates Recipe JSON-LD from plain input: minutes become ISO 8601 durations, each line becomes an ingredient or a step, and the script block is validated as you type.

How it works

  1. Name, photos and times

Type prep and cook time as 15, 1h 20m or 1:20 – they are written as PT15M or PT1H20M, and the total is calculated if you leave it empty.

  2. Ingredients and steps

One ingredient per line with its quantity, one step per line; a line starting with ## begins a section such as "Batter" or "Sauce".

  3. Copy and check

Name and image are required by Google; the Check tab lists every recommended property still missing.

Features

  • Durations without ISO 8601 by hand

Minutes, hours and minutes, or h:mm are converted to the PT…H…M format; imported durations are turned back into minutes for editing.

  • Steps and sections

Each line becomes a HowToStep with its text; section lines create HowToSection groups, the structure Google uses for guided recipes.

  • Nutrition and diet

Calories with their unit plus fat, carbohydrates, protein, sugar, fiber and sodium, and a suitableForDiet value such as VegetarianDiet.

  • Recipe video

Add a VideoObject with name, thumbnail, file or player URL and upload date when the recipe has a video.

Limits & privacy

Imported JSON-LD or HTML can be up to 1 MB. Steps can only contain text in the form; images or videos for single steps need editing in the JSON.

Google’s How-to rich results were removed in 2023, but Recipe still uses HowToStep and HowToSection for its instructions – that markup is current. Ingredient lines are written as you type them; quantities are not parsed or converted.

Validation uses the schema.org vocabulary (© schema.org sponsors, CC BY-SA 3.0, see licenses). Recipes stay in your browser – see the privacy page.

FAQ

Which recipe properties are required?

name and image. Google recommends author, datePublished, description, prepTime, cookTime, totalTime, keywords, recipeYield, recipeCategory, recipeCuisine, recipeIngredient, recipeInstructions, nutrition.calories, video and a rating.

How do I write cook time in ISO 8601?

P for period, T for time, then hours H and minutes M: 90 minutes is PT1H30M. Type 90 in the form and it is converted for you.

Should instructions be one block of text?

Use one step per instruction. Separate HowToStep items let Google show the steps one by one; a single text block cannot be split.

Can I add ratings?

Only if readers can rate the recipe on your page and the average is shown there. Do not copy ratings from other sites.

What is recipeYield?

The number of servings or the amount the recipe makes, for example 4 servings or 12 cookies.
