This converter turns Markdown into MediaWiki wikitext for Wikipedia-style wikis, Fandom and company wikis: headings, wikitables, code, references and internal links. Paste Markdown and copy the wikitext into the edit box.

How it works
Paste Markdown
Paste an article, open a .md file or try the sample.
Set wiki conventions
Start headings at == or =, use <syntaxhighlight> or <pre>, footnotes as with <references /> at the end, as the Cite extension expects.
Internal links
Relative links like [Backup](Backup_strategy) become Backup.
Safe escaping
Characters that would start wikitext ([[, {{, |, , ~~~~) are written as HTML entities, and lines starting with * # : ; are protected.
Limits & privacy
Files up to 10 MB. Inputs above 256 KB are converted in a Web Worker, so the page stays responsive. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion runs in your browser, and Open from URL fetches the file directly from the address you enter. See the privacy page.
What wikitext cannot express
Numbered lists in wikitext always start at 1. Code blocks or tables inside list items are joined onto the item line with a warning. Math becomes <math> tags, which need the Math extension.
FAQ
Why do headings start at ==?
A single = is the level of the page title in MediaWiki. Articles use == for top sections; change the option if your wiki differs.
Are images from URLs shown?
Most wikis disable external images, so they become links. Relative names become that point to uploaded files.
Does code highlighting work?
<syntaxhighlight lang="…"> needs the SyntaxHighlight extension, which Wikipedia and most wikis have. Choose <pre> otherwise.
Can I paste the result into the visual editor?
No. Switch to source editing first; the visual editor treats pasted wikitext as plain text.
Is this the same as pandoc -t mediawiki?
It covers the same everyday syntax without installing anything, and it also writes references and sortable tables.
