Text to Columns without Excel
This tool splits lines of text into columns the way Excel's Text to Columns wizard does – by delimiter, by fixed width or with a regular expression – and lets you set a data format for each column. Copy the result into a spreadsheet or download CSV or XLSX.
Last updated:
How it works
Choose the data type
Delimited when commas, tabs or other characters separate the fields; Fixed width when the fields are aligned with spaces; Regular expression for anything else.
Set delimiters or breaks
Tick delimiters and the text qualifier, or click the ruler to place column breaks. The table preview updates as you change anything.
Format and export
Give columns a format – General, Text, Date (MDY, DMY, YMD …) or Do not import – then copy for Excel, or download CSV, TSV or XLSX.
Features
The wizard's options
Tab, semicolon, comma, space and other delimiters, "Treat consecutive delimiters as one", text qualifier, start row, and the decimal, thousands and trailing-minus settings.
Fixed-width ruler
Breaks are suggested where every line has a column of spaces; click the scale or the text to add or remove a break, or type positions.
Regular expressions
Capture groups become columns, with ready patterns for access logs, key: value lines and "Name <e-mail>". Lines that do not match can be kept or skipped.
Column formats
Text keeps leading zeros and long IDs; Date reads 03/04/2024 in the order you choose and writes a real date; Do not import drops a column.
Paste into Excel or Sheets
Copy for Excel puts tab-separated rows on the clipboard, so every value lands in its own cell, or download an .xlsx with typed cells.
Limits & privacy
Text up to 100 MB; the preview shows the first 1,000 rows and the downloads contain all rows. Files over 5 MB are not shown in the editor and are split in a background worker. Regular expressions run in a worker and can be cancelled; CSV cells starting with = + - @ are escaped by default. Nothing is uploaded. See the privacy page.
FAQ
How do I split text into columns without Excel?
Paste the text, choose Delimited, tick the character that separates the values and look at the table. Then copy it for Excel or download CSV or XLSX.
How do I split by comma but keep commas inside quotes?
Leave the text qualifier on ". "Smith, Ann" stays in one column, and "" inside quotes becomes one quote, as in Excel.
What does "Treat consecutive delimiters as one" do?
Several delimiters in a row count as one break. Use it with Space for text aligned by several spaces, so no empty columns appear.
How do I keep leading zeros like 00417?
Set that column to Text. General converts 00417 to the number 417, exactly like Excel, unless Keep leading zeros is on.
How do I split fixed-width text?
Choose Fixed width. Breaks are detected from the space columns; click the ruler to adjust them, or type positions such as 9, 21, 26.
How are dates converted?
Choose Date with the order of day, month and year in your text. Two-digit years follow Excel: 00–29 → 2000s, 30–99 → 1900s. Invalid dates stay text.
