How it works
Type or paste
Write in the box, paste from any editor, or open a .txt or .md file. Counts update with every keystroke.
Set the language
Word and sentence boundaries follow the rules of the language you pick, including Chinese, Japanese and Thai, which do not use spaces.
Read the statistics
Words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, unique words, averages, reading and speaking time, plus the most frequent words and phrases.
Features
Counts for every language
Words are found with the Unicode word-boundary rules (Intl.Segmenter), not by splitting at spaces. Hyphenated words such as well-known count as one word, as in word processors; numbers count as words.
Characters as people see them
Characters are grapheme clusters: an emoji with a skin tone, a flag or an accented letter typed as two code points counts as one character.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time uses 238 words per minute, the average for silent reading of English non-fiction in Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis; speaking time uses 150. Both speeds can be changed.
Keyword density
The top 20 words and the most frequent two- and three-word phrases with their share of the text. Common function words can be excluded for English, German, Spanish, Portuguese and French.
CJK counting like Microsoft Word
Optionally count each Chinese or Japanese character as one word, which is how Microsoft Word reports East Asian text.
Limits & privacy
Text and files can be up to 200 MB. Up to 256 KB the statistics update on every keystroke; longer text is counted in a background worker, and files above 8 MB are streamed. Two- and three-word phrases are collected for the first 10 MB of a file.
Sentence detection follows the Unicode sentence-boundary rules: abbreviations such as “Dr.” followed by a capital letter may start a new sentence. Reading and speaking times are estimates; real speed depends on the reader and the text.
The text is counted in your browser and never uploaded. See the privacy page.
FAQ
How are words counted?
A word is a run of letters or digits between word boundaries defined by Unicode. Punctuation and spaces are not words; contractions such as don't and hyphenated words count once.
How is a paragraph counted?
Each line that contains text is a paragraph, as in word processors where pressing Enter starts a new paragraph. Empty lines are not counted.
Why does my word count differ from Google Docs or Word?
Tools treat dashes, URLs, numbers and East Asian text differently. For Chinese or Japanese, turn on "Count CJK characters as words" to match Microsoft Word.
How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
About 4 minutes 12 seconds at the default 238 words per minute. Set your own reading speed to adjust all estimates.
Can I count words in a large document?
Yes. Files up to 200 MB are counted in a background worker, chunk by chunk. Phrase statistics cover the first 10 MB.
Is my text stored or uploaded?
No. Counting happens in your browser; the text is not sent anywhere.
