Markdown table

Markdown table options

Files never leave your browserHow?

This converter reads tab-separated values – a .tsv file or cells copied from a spreadsheet – and writes a GitHub Flavored Markdown table. Paste the text and copy the table.

How it works

  1. Paste tab-separated text

Copy a range in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice or a database client and paste it, or open a .tsv or .tab file. Tabs are used as the delimiter.

  2. Check the columns

The preview grid shows how the cells were split. Hide columns, change their order and choose the alignment.

  3. Copy the table

Copy the Markdown or download it as .md, then paste it into a README, issue, pull request or wiki.

Features

  • Tabs only

Commas, semicolons and pipes inside values stay in the cell, because only the tab separates columns. That is why spreadsheets copy cells as TSV.

  • Clipboard-friendly

Cells with line breaks, which spreadsheets put in quotes when copying, stay one cell and are written with <br>.

  • Leading zeros kept

Values are written exactly as they appear in the text: 007, +44 and 1e3 stay as typed.

  • Column alignment

Numeric columns are right-aligned automatically. Choose left, center or right for any column, or no alignment at all.

Limits & privacy

TSV files can be up to 20 MB and are converted up to 50,000 rows. Files above 5 MB are converted from the file without loading them into the editor.

Tab-separated text is what you get almost every time you copy a range of cells, so it is the shortest path from a spreadsheet to a Markdown table: no export, no file. Quoted cells are read as in CSV, which is how spreadsheets put line breaks into copied cells; a stray quote character at the start of a cell can therefore swallow the following tab. If that happens, choose the pipe or semicolon delimiter instead, or clean the source.

Markdown has one header row and no merged cells; formulas arrive as their displayed values. To keep formatting or choose a sheet from a workbook, open the file in Excel to Markdown Table. Your data is processed only in your browser – see the privacy page.

FAQ

What is a TSV file?

Tab-separated values: plain text with one row per line and a tab character between cells. Spreadsheets and many database tools export it.

How do I convert cells copied from Excel to Markdown?

Select the cells, copy them and paste here. The clipboard holds them as tab-separated text, which becomes a Markdown table at once.

Why are my columns not split?

The text probably has no tabs – some editors turn tabs into spaces. Use CSV to Markdown Table for comma or semicolon separated data.

Can the first row be data instead of a header?

Yes. Turn off First row is the header and the columns are named column_1, column_2 and so on.

Should I use TSV or CSV for Markdown tables?

TSV when the data comes from a spreadsheet or contains commas; CSV when it is an export file. Both give the same Markdown.
