Markdown output

Files never leave your browserHow?

This converter turns Jira wiki markup from issues and comments into GitHub Flavored Markdown: headings, code blocks, tables, panels, nested lists, links and mentions. Paste Jira text and copy the Markdown.

Last updated:

How it works

  1. Paste Jira markup

Copy the description in text mode or from an export, paste it or open a .txt file.

  2. Choose the Markdown style

Emoticons as emoji, panels as GitHub alerts, list marker, heading style and code fence.

  3. Copy the Markdown

Paste it into GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian or a README; the preview shows how it renders.

Features

  • Complete Jira syntax

    *strong*, _emphasis_, -deleted-, +inserted+, ^sup^, ~sub~, ??citation??, {{monospace}} and \\ line breaks.

  • Code and panels

{code:java} keeps the language, {noformat} becomes a plain fence, {quote} and bq. become quotes, {panel} an alert or quote.

  • Tables

    ||header|| rows become the Markdown table header; | inside links and code does not split cells.

  • Mentions and emoticons

    [~user] becomes @user; (/), (x) and (!) become ✅ ❌ ⚠️.

Limits & privacy

Files up to 10 MB. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion runs in your browser, and Open from URL fetches the file directly from the address you enter. See the privacy page.

Limits

{color}, {anchor} and similar macros are removed. Underline (+text+), superscript and subscript have no Markdown syntax: they are written as <u>, and HTML unless you turn that off. Account IDs in mentions are not resolved to names.

FAQ

How do I export a Jira issue to Markdown?

Open the issue, switch the description to text mode or use the issue XML/Word export, copy the wiki markup and paste it here.

What happens to {color}?

Markdown has no colors, so the color macro is removed and the text is kept.

Are attachments converted?

!image.png! becomes ![](image.png) and [^file.pdf] a link with the file name; download the files from Jira separately.

Why do single line breaks become \\?

In Jira a newline inside a paragraph is a line break, so it is kept as a Markdown hard break.

Can I convert Markdown to Jira too?

Yes, with Markdown → Jira, linked above the result.
