Jira output

Files never leave your browserHow?

This converter rewrites Markdown as Jira wiki markup for issue descriptions and comments: headings, bold, code blocks with language, tables, nested lists and links. Paste Markdown and copy the Jira text.

Last updated:

How it works

  1. Paste Markdown

    Paste a bug report or PR description, open a .md file or try the sample.

  2. Check the options

    Choose panels or quotes for notes, {noformat} for plain code and whether code languages are mapped.

  3. Copy into Jira

    Paste into a Jira field that uses the wiki renderer (Jira Server / Data Center, or the text mode of legacy fields).

Features

  • Jira syntax, not HTML

    *bold*, _italic_, -strike-, {{monospace}}, h1.–h6., bq., {quote} and [text|url] exactly as the Jira renderer expects.

  • Code macros

    ```java becomes {code:java}; code without a language can become {noformat}. Aliases like py, sh or yml are mapped to Jira names.
  • Nested and mixed lists
    Bullets inside numbered lists are written as #*, deeper levels as ** and ##.
  • Smart escaping
    Characters that would start Jira effects, like * or { }, are escaped only where needed, so snake_case and well-known stay readable.
Limits & privacy
Files up to 10 MB. Inputs above 256 KB are converted in a Web Worker, so the page stays responsive. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion runs in your browser, and Open from URL fetches the file directly from the address you enter. See the privacy page.
Limits of Jira wiki markup
Jira cannot start a numbered list at a number other than 1, has no column alignment in tables and no footnotes: the converter warns about each case. Task lists become ☐ and ☑ characters. A list item cannot hold a code block, so the block follows the list. Raw HTML in the Markdown is dropped because Jira does not render it.
FAQ
How do I convert Markdown to Jira format?
Paste the Markdown on the left. The Jira wiki markup appears on the right; press Copy and paste it into the issue.
Does Jira Cloud use wiki markup?
The new Jira Cloud editor is visual, but it still converts wiki markup typed or pasted into it in most fields, and automation rules and the REST API v2 accept it.
Why are my line breaks different?
In Jira a single newline is a line break. The converter joins soft-wrapped Markdown lines so paragraphs do not break in the middle.
How are GitHub notes converted?
> [!NOTE] and similar alerts become {panel} blocks with a title and a matching background color, or quotes if you prefer.
Can I convert Jira text back to Markdown?
Yes. Use Jira → Markdown, the reverse converter linked above the result.
