SubRip to WebVTT for HTML5 video

This converter turns SubRip .srt subtitles into WebVTT .vtt files for the HTML5 <track> element. It writes the WEBVTT header and WebVTT timecodes, escapes special characters and keeps italics and positions.

Last updated:

How it works

  1. Add SRT files

Paste SubRip subtitles or drop one or many .srt files in any common encoding.

  2. Set the options

Keep or drop formatting and positions, add cue numbers as identifiers and shift every timing if the subtitles are early or late.

  3. Download VTT

Download the .vtt file, or a ZIP of all files. The Checks tab lists overlapping, empty or broken cues.

Features

  • Spec-correct WebVTT

WEBVTT signature, "00:01:02.500" timecodes with a dot, blank lines between cues, no "-->" inside text, and & and < escaped as the W3C WebVTT specification requires.

  • Formatting kept

<i>, <b> and <u> are valid in WebVTT and stay; <font color> tags, which browsers do not support in VTT, are removed.

  • Positions converted

SubRip {\an8} top-of-screen tags become line:0 cue settings, and the other {\an1}–{\an9} codes become line and align settings.

  • Time shift

Move all cues earlier or later, e.g. -1.5 or 0:02, to fix subtitles that are out of sync.

  • Encoding fixed

Windows-1251, Windows-1252 and UTF-16 .srt files are read correctly; WebVTT is always written in UTF-8, as required.

Limits & privacy

Up to 200 files, each up to 20 MB, 100 MB in total. Conversion runs in your browser (large batches in a background worker); nothing is uploaded. See the privacy page.

FAQ

How do I convert SRT to VTT?

Drop the .srt file or paste it, check the WebVTT on the right and click Download VTT.

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT line, uses a dot before milliseconds and supports styling and positions; SRT uses a comma and numbers every cue.

Why does my browser not show .srt subtitles?

The HTML5 <track> element only accepts WebVTT. Convert the file to .vtt and reference it with <track kind="subtitles" src="file.vtt">.

Are the cue numbers kept?

WebVTT does not need them. Choose Cue identifiers: Numbers to keep 1, 2, 3 as identifiers, for example for scripts that refer to cue IDs.

Can I convert a whole folder of SRT files?

Yes, drop up to 200 files; download them as one ZIP.

How do I convert back to SRT?

Use VTT to SRT. A round trip SRT → VTT → SRT gives the same timings and text.
