WebVTT to SubRip for players and editors

This converter turns WebVTT .vtt captions into SubRip .srt subtitles that every player and editor accepts. Cues are numbered, timecodes get hours and commas, and WebVTT-only parts such as STYLE, REGION and NOTE are removed.

How it works

  1. Add VTT files

Paste WebVTT captions or drop one or many .vtt files, for example from YouTube, Vimeo, Zoom or a browser course.

  2. Set the options

Turn voice tags into speaker names, keep italics, keep top positions as {\an8} and shift timings if needed.

  3. Download SRT

Download the .srt file or a ZIP of all files; the Checks tab shows invalid or overlapping cues.

Features

  • Valid SubRip

Cues numbered from 1, "HH:MM:SS,mmm --> HH:MM:SS,mmm" timecodes with hours always present, and a blank line between cues.

  • WebVTT extras removed

The header, NOTE comments, STYLE and REGION blocks and cue settings are dropped; class, ruby and karaoke timestamp tags are stripped from the text.

  • Speaker names

<v Dr. Rivera> becomes "Dr. Rivera: " at the start of the cue, so the speaker is not lost.

  • Entities decoded

&, <, and other entities become real characters, as SubRip has no escaping.

  • Short timecodes handled

WebVTT allows "01:04.000" without hours; the SRT output always writes 00:01:04,000.

Limits & privacy

Up to 200 files, each up to 20 MB, 100 MB in total. Files without the WEBVTT header are still converted and flagged in the Checks tab. Nothing is uploaded. See the privacy page.

FAQ

How do I convert VTT to SRT?

Drop the .vtt file or paste it and click Download SRT. Cue numbers and SubRip timecodes are created automatically.

What happens to WebVTT styling?

STYLE blocks and class tags have no SubRip equivalent and are removed. Italic, bold and underline tags are kept, because most players support them.

Are cue positions kept?

Cues placed at the top (line:0) get the {\an8} tag, which VLC, mpv and most TVs understand. Other positions fall back to the default bottom.

Can I convert YouTube auto-captions?

Yes. Their karaoke-style timestamp tags inside the text are removed. To also merge repeated lines into a transcript, use SRT to TXT.

Is the conversion lossless?

Text and timings are kept exactly. Only WebVTT features that SubRip cannot store – styles, regions, notes – are dropped and reported.
